This paper asserts that while Nigeria is the key country in Sub-Saharan Africa for the success of American policy and interests, it is poorly understood by policymakers. To overcome this lack of understanding, the author analyzes where fractures in the state occur and why. The paper offers practical recommendations to US Government officials in support of positive outcomes in Nigeria that could ensure a stable, prosperous country which can partner the United States in attaining mutual goals.
