On 14 June 2013 the European Commission was granted the mandate to launch negotiations on a comprehensive trade and investment agreement with the United States. Reaching a deal is vital for both parties, argues the author, but a successful outcome risks being compromised by political sensitivities on both sides of the Atlantic.
