This paper summarizes an October 1993 Cornell conference on the future of US nuclear weapons laboratories. The participants agree that even after the Cold War, there remains an important, albeit smaller, nuclear weapons mission for these laboratories. They also argue that current technology transfer activities, while beneficial in the short-run, will not supply a long-run raison d'être for the laboratories. The paper includes the background papers, summaries of the three panel presentations, and summaries of the panel discussions.
