This paper provides information on the peacekeeping activities of the United Nations Transnational Administration in Eastern Slavonia, Baranja, and Western Sirmium (UNTAES). The authors describe the transitional government and law enforcement activities of UNTAES and detail the role of the UN in bringing permanent stability and security to the previously Serb-occupied part of eastern Croatia. The paper also highlights the successes of the special UNTAES program to achieve regional disarmament through the active buy-back of small arms and light weapons from local residents and former combatants.
