This brief discusses the consequences of inadequate international environmental conventions and governance. Specifically, it examines the case of Nicaraguan farm workers still suffering from side effects related to the use of the pesticide DBCP between the 1960s and the 1980s. To help avoid similar events in the future, the authors recommend that governments should strengthen international environmental cooperation on such issues and that development cooperation should facilitate the ability of citizens to protect their environmental rights and help national and local authorities to implement existing legislation.
