This paper uses panel data for 5,979 individuals interviewed in Japan before and after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident to analyze the effect of the accident on people’s subjective well-being. The results suggest that the effects of the combined earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident on well-being are related to the respondents' proximity to the Fukushima site.
