This report reviews reductions in the armed forces and opposition forces of Central American countries and the context of each demobilization experience. It offers an overview of the Nicaraguan and El Salvadorian peace processes, and illustrates how a trend toward demilitarization in the region developed and established a sense of regional security. The author examines the challenges to demobilization and reintegration exercises and the reintegration support for former combatants. The paper concludes by drawing lessons from those exercises which may prove helpful for foreseen demobilizations or efforts to demilitarize.
