This commentary talks about the increased activity of Russia's armed forces since the start of its reforms in 2010. It argues that the armed forces' unannounced tests for combat readiness were intended to demonstrate the effectiveness of its reforms. It also claims that the media coverage of the military exercises were meant to improve President Putin's image and to imply that Russia is under a military threat from the US.
