This paper looks at the future of the US dollar as the world's key currency (KC). It argues that the future of international money will be determined not only by markets but also by public policy choices. Looking to the future, the author argues that there are reasons to expect that policy makers in the major powers may be less than fully enthusiastic about supporting a KC role for their respective currencies in the coming years. The consequence may be an enduring KC role for the dollar.
