This commentary examines the political role of China’s first lady, Peng Liyuan. According to the author, Peng has used her existing profile to enhance Beijing’s image both domestically and internationally. However, the author also cautions Peng to carefully navigate public perceptions so as to avoid claims that she is creating a cult of personality.
