This commentary argues that a new great-power relationship between China and the US is unlikely to come about. The author argues that the rifts between the two countries are a serious impediment to real long term cooperation. As the relative power gap between them decreases, both states will increasingly compete for influence, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Nonetheless, in the short term, each country might accommodate the other as it will enable them to focus on domestic challenges.
