This commentary discusses the implications of an increased turnout at the European parliamentary elections in 2014. It argues that, although strengthening the democratic legitimacy of the European institutions by increasing turnout remains a core goal of the EU, more voters at the polls might result in a more effective mobilization of the electorate by 'eurosceptic' and protest groupings.
