This publication contains seven essays which discuss the challenges and implications of water security in South and Southeast Asia. The authors argue that the lack of comprehensive and effective regional frameworks for cooperation hinders sustainable management of the waterways which run from the Himalayan mountains. They then recommend steps that both upstream and downstream countries could take in order to better manage the region’s shared water resources. These include, among others, enhanced institutionalization of cooperation regarding river exploitation and the reduction of waste in ways that lessen dependence on water supplies.
