This brief talks about Big Data, or the collection, retention, and use of massive volumes of information about individuals, and argues that it undermines privacy rights. It focuses on specific threats and risks Big Data represents, with a special focus on Canada. The brief concludes that the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in Canada can play a pivotal role in pressuring organizations to embrace privacy-friendly guidelines and best practices so as to minimize the threat.
