This article discusses the impact of the Syrian conflict on Lebanon. The author argues that Shiite Hezbollah and Lebanese Sunni Islamist involvement in Syrian fighting has radicalized sectarian tension in Lebanon itself, where Lebanese Armed Forces provide the last buffer against all-out sectarian war. Arguing that the fragile peace is being threatened by an erosion of Lebanon’s political institutions, the author advocates western assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces.
