This paper explores the behavior of nuclear-capable states in times of major political crises. Analyzing specific historical case studies, it addresses the dangers of nuclear weapons and materials falling into the hands of unauthorized actors during political crises. It concludes that as long as this danger remains, the worst case scenario involving environmental disasters through nuclear weapons remains a possibility.
