This brief looks at the rising cost of rice between 2002 and 2013 and its socio-political consequences. Although there are those in developing countries who have offset the price increases with higher incomes, others have obviously not been so lucky. As a result, the paper argues that protections need to be put in place in order to prevent rapid price spikes from doing any more damage than they’ve already done. In the case of African farmers, however, higher returns on their crops would be beneficial too.
