This brief analyzes the European shale gas debate. The authors claim that the EU member states are divided between enthusiasm and wariness towards the shale gas industry, while the European public is locked between the demands for more information and an outdated image of the industry. They argue that the European Commission could become a lynchpin in making the most of the ongoing efforts of the EU member states and creating robust lines of communication with industry stakeholders.
