This paper discusses the influence of the small- and micro enterprise sector on the economy of Kenya and other eastern African countries. The author pays particular attention to the economic role of small traders and the traditional government policies towards small scale producers. He goes on to describes the paradox of how small traders have been perceived by African governments as unproductive and with no major role to play in national development even though, traditionally, the small scale producers have been responsible for operating large shares of the national distribution systems.
