This brief discusses the US-Japan alliance in light of the US pivot to the Asia-Pacific region. It argues that cooperation in areas beyond traditional security could strengthen new and existing political, military and institutional ties between the US and Japan. Military resources could be used in innovative ways to, for example, build regional humanitarian assistance and disaster relief capacity.
