The author in this brief notes how Washington and Beijing exert pressures in the Asia-Pacific through the “balance of relations”. He argues that the “balance of relations” favors US interests, provides space for China to modernize, and enables regional stability and prosperity. But if existing dynamics change, this balance could easily be upset.
