This paper shows how carbon maps can be used to prove that biofuels reduce carbon emissions. The authors calculate a carbon map according to the sustainability requirements for biofuel production by the European Commission for the Llanos Orientales in Colombia, and show the emission savings that would be generated by biofuels based on palm, soy and sugar cane if an area were to be converted to produce feedstock for these biofuel options. In concluding, the authors argue that carbon maps should be the basis for sustainable land use planning in agricultural production in the country.
