This paper reports the results of a survey of almost all certified and in-conversion organic export operations in Uganda in 2005. The author provides detailed information on total products exported, total export values, export standards, company sizes and ownership structures. The author also details certification costs, locally added values, marketing channels, crop procurement systems, management of organic operations, and the main challenges experienced by exporters. The paper describes how the numbers of certified exporters in Uganda have been growing rapidly, while general export values have done so more slowly. The author explains that a handful of firms exporting coffee and cotton dominate the export market and that most of the news entrants are small, relatively weak, and depend on donor support.
