This commentary compares the post-2010 political crises in Tunisia and Egypt. The authors argue that the more violent upheavals in Egypt may cause the conflicting parties in Tunisia to be more cautious, making a deescalation and a peaceful transition to democracy more likely. They conclude that the European Union has more leverage on developments in Tunisia than it does in Egypt, and should therefore devote at least as much attention to Tunisia as it has to Egypt.
