This paper discusses the use of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generation and MSW generation per capita as indicators for environmental pressures. It examines MSW generation in South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific Region and argues that MSW generation is a fundamental indicator for environmental pressures since municipalities usually prepare annual budgets for MSW management based on annual MSW generation and collection. It concludes that the use of MSW generation and MSW generation per capita indicators would enhance governmental decision-making in MSW management and raise awareness of waste sector greenhouse gas emissions.
