This paper looks at the relationship between consumption patterns and the market economy. The author argues that there is a contradiction between sustainable consumption and economic growth; sustainable consumption needs people to consume as little as necessary, whereas market-economy systems demand an increase in consumption. In concluding, he suggests a range of ways in which sustainable consumption could be more readily adopted by society.
