This brief examines the potential effects of the Georgian government’s efforts to reestablish political and economic ties with Russia by the reopening a railway communication link through Abkhazia. The author argues that, although there are political risks involved, the Abkhaz railway could have a positive effect, not only on Russian-Georgian relations, but on the southern Caucasus region as a whole.
