This paper explores the strategic potential of EU labor mobility for the European Monetary Union, individual member state economies, and mobile workers themselves. First, the authors analyze mobility trends in Europe before and during the crisis. Second, they shed light on the costs and benefits of labor mobility. Finally, they propose a series of policy recommendations for developing a strategy on labor mobility. They conclude that increased and optimized labor mobility can generate substantial economic benefit for all relevant actors but is only one of the solutions that can address Europe’s current challenges.
