In order to secure growth prospects and innovation within the EU, creating a labour market adjusted to the needs of older workers and facilitating longer decent working lives is imperative. However, existing barriers and disincentives still hamper the employment prospects of older workers, resulting in premature withdrawal from the labor force. This paper looks at four dimensions – the government, social partners, employers and individuals – to identify the key barriers to the employment of older workers and provides policy recommendations on how to address these.
