This paper is a summary of a September 2012 workshop on the adoption of social media, crowd sourcing and other mass collaboration technologies in disaster management. The authors argue that the growing use of these new technologies is opening up new opportunities for disaster management but at the same time creating new challenges for policymakers looking to incorporate these tools into existing frameworks. They conclude by making suggestions on how to improve the use of new technologies in disaster management and humanitarian aid practices.
