This paper looks at how labor migration affects the spread of democracy. More specifically, it describes how beginning in the late 1990s Moldovan emigration strongly affected political preferences in the country and played a key role in bringing down the last ruling communist government in Europe. The paper concludes by arguing that emigration can create 'political spillovers' back in home countries and that they vary depending on the political regime in the destination country.
