This paper explores the unique factors driving the high rate of drug abuse in India's Punjab region. The author argues that factors including historical developments in the region’s rural economy and the Punjabi culture of masculinity influence Punjab’s drug use. He further states that drug abuse among Punjab's youth is driven by their relatively-affluent class background, unemployment, and the twin cultures of consumption and aspiration.
