This paper argues that ambitious targets on education will be essential to the success of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The authors review the strong correlation between education and human development, explain how education has been conceived in previous international development frameworks and outline the progress of the Millennium Development Goals on education. They further examine education for sustainable development and review the current discussions on how education can contribute to the post-2015 development agenda. The paper concludes with a proposal for education as an SDG.
