This paper summarizes policy research findings on the regional sources of tension that affect Afghanistan and Pakistan. These include 1) governance, 2) social and economic issues, 3) conflict in Afghanistan, 4) ethnicity and sectarianism, 5) radicalization, and 6) militancy. It also looks at the interests and 'red-lines' that the major powers in the region (India, Iran, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia) have with regard to the two countries.
