This paper critically discusses the Hungarian Prime Minister's ambitious views concerning deeper cooperation between countries in Central Europe. The authors claim that there is a visible gap between politicians' rhetoric and their actions, particularly when it comes to Hungary's difficult relations with Romania and Slovakia. Furthermore, they argue that attempts by Budapest to unify Hungarians living in neighboring countries, not only fails to engender a good atmosphere in the region, but also shows how alive both resentments from the past and temptations to use them to achieve temporary political goals are among the country’s governing elite.
