This policy brief analyzes South Africa’s post-conflict development and peacebuilding mission in Burundi and the lessons learned from the intervention. The authors explain that although Burundi is often heralded as a model for successful intervention, the withdrawal of South African troops in 2009 left the country in a fragile state and that South Africa missed opportunities to follow up on its earlier involvement. The authors conclude that the Burundi intervention clearly illustrates that South Africa needs a longer-term post-conflict development and peacebuilding strategy.
