This paper focuses on the long-standing efforts to establish a WMD-free zone in the Middle East. It argues that the Arab uprisings have created a golden opportunity to reinvigorate this project, but concrete action is now necessary. The region's civil society and parliaments, for example, must play increasing roles in shaping its diverse foreign and security policies; Israel; Iran and the League of Arab States must participate in the discussions; and the latter need to be supported by outside organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
