This report looks at the composition and roots of Syria's political opposition. The author argues that the opposition’s struggles to resolve its internal contradictions have rendered it unable to take the initiative or seize on tactical opportunities. However, he states that the coalition remains a central actor while the declining influence of civilian activists, rising power of jihadi factions, and escalating fighting among armed groups make the creation of a more representative political front difficult. He concludes by giving a set of recommendations on how the coalition and its backers could address its shortcomings.
