This paper discusses the background of Russian efforts to prevent former Soviet republics from tightening their relations with the European Union. Focusing on the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November 2013, the author argues that Moscow is actively attempting to slow down or even block the possibility of closer cooperation between the EU and the former Soviet republics, as Russia views relations between the EU and the post-Soviet states as a threat to its own influence in the region.
