This bulletin examines the US-Japan alliance and the topics of concern addressed at their 2013 Security Consultative Committee (SCC). The author particularly focuses on Japan and says that for many in the country, increased Japan-US defense cooperation has more to do with addressing the rise of China than the threats posed by North Korea. He also talks about the role that the SCC agreement gives Japan and the country’s main concern regarding the alliance: the gradual decline of US involvement in Asia.
