This paper looks at the social mobility of the black African majority in South Africa since the end of apartheid. The authors argue it is the lack of employment opportunities that stands out as the major obstacle to social mobility. They conclude by giving a set of recommendations to the government of South Africa, donor countries and international institutions on how this issue should be addressed.
