This paper examines the outcome of the 2013 presidential elections in Mali and the challenges the newly-elected Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has to face. After briefly looking at the election's outcomes, the authors discuss the high turnout and the lessons learned for the parties involved. They conclude that challenging reforms lie ahead as political and administrative institutions must be rebuilt, the army must be brought under constitutional control and President Keita must find a constructive way of dealing with the Tuareg rebels in the North.
