This note gives an overview of the human rights situation in Azerbaijan following the 2013 presidential election. The author highlights some of the human rights issues facing the country including corruption and the curtailing of freedoms of expression and assembly. He also points out, however, that Azerbaijan’s stability, its friendly strategic relations with the West and distance from Iran, and particularly its large hydrocarbon reserves and strong economic relations with UK companies, make it a valuable ally for many.
