This testimony before the US Committee on Foreign Affairs looks at how the US can secure its long-term interests and objectives in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of military forces in 2014. The author argues that the US has to "get serious" about government reform in Afghanistan by ensuring domestic political competition. He believes that the US has to fully fund the ANSF for many years to come and accept compromise with the Taliban in order to ensure a sustainable future settlement for Afghanistan.
