This brief argues that, in order to win international and domestic support and be seen as a serious force to govern Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood needs to retreat, regroup and rethink its vision for religion, society and politics. The author suggests that the Brotherhood 1) follow the example of Tunisia and Turkey by openly embracing pluralism, 2) embrace the elite, 3) divorce the Salafis, 4) focus on institutions not just on individuals, 5) bring women and the youth to the fore, and 6) understand the Islamic Sharia through the aims and spirit of the law rather than as a penal code.
