This brief talks about large land investment projects in sub-Saharan Africa as well as the institutions within which land acquisitions occur and how they affect local populations' welfare and human rights. The authors say that existing land governance systems in sub-Saharan African countries privilege powerful actors and lead to human rights violations. Following this, they provide a set of policy recommendations for the host country governments, investors, and the international community which could promote the benefits of land investments for local populations.
