This paper examines the relations between China and Central Asia since the collapse of the USSR. In particular, the authors analyze the historical and strategic background of these relations, key aspects of political ties and security issues, as well as China’s economic and social presence in Central Asia. They conclude that China has appeared as a major player in Central Asia since 1991. Furthermore, they argue that security and political issues are the basis for China's relations with the region, while the main field of cooperation is economic.
