This paper examines the extent to which the Lisbon Treaty has enabled the European Parliament (EP) to bring accountability and democratic scrutiny to the EU's Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ) policies. The authors suggest that while the EP has become an active co-legislator on AFSJ policy issues, it has also encountered a number of challenges in this role since 2009.
