This brief argues that Europe should use its influence to help forge political consensus and deescalate tensions in Lebanon. According to the author, Europe could do this by: 1) talking to all sides, 2) backing efforts aimed at strengthening Lebanon’s institutional capacity, 3) channeling economic assistance towards the north of the country and resisting pressure to sanction Lebanese banks, and 4) stepping up to share the burden of this humanitarian crisis.
