This commentary argues that North Africa’s addiction to state subsidies –on fuel and food in particular– undermines government policies in the region and fuels smuggling. Treating the subsidies "disease", however, may lead to further social and political turmoil. This, argues the author, is likely to happen even if there no reforms so it is time that policymakers look at this issue seriously.
